According to AWC Field Ecologist, Nicola Palmer, this is normal behaviour for males: “It’s not unusual for us to catch them with wounds on their back or missing an eye/ear/tail. Critically endangered Central Rock Rats are making a comeback at Newhaven! Once locally extinct, surveys now show this reintroduced species is thriving both inside AND beyond our feral-proof fence 🤯🥳 During our recent fortnight of Brushtail Possum, Black-footed Rock-wallaby and Golden Bandicoot surveys, CRRs couldn't stop crashing the party... Camera trap detections on sanctuary have nearly quintupled since this time last year. CRRs popped up on 10/10 camera traps outside the feral proof fence
